learn guitar blues
For a begginer on the guitar what are good blues songs to learn?

I’ve just recently decided i like the blues but i don’t know what songs to learn. I don’t want something overly complicated cuz ive only been playing two years. Are there any artists in particular that i need to know about?

ok so far everybody’s got a fairly good answer – 12 bar blues is right. Good songs off the top of my head in that category –

“Key to the Highway” you can find a nice version of this on Derek and the Dominoes “Layla” .

“Hideaway” You can find a nice version of this on John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers album or Jeff Healey’s See the Light disc.

Albert’s Shuffle – Mike Bloomfied from the cd “Super Session”

Red House – although the way Jimi Hendrix does this it sounds hard, it’s a simple 12 bar blues in a psychedelic disguise.

All the above are also basically “Major” blues as opposed to Minor Blues. Minor Blues might include songs like:

The Thrill is Gone (although technically this is a 1-4-6-5 progression and not a 12 bar blues)

“I got a mind to give up livin’” is another good example of a minor blues.

There are really too many great blues artists to begin naming – all the Kings, Freddie King, BB King, Albert King.
Muddy Waters. Johnny Winter, Albert Collins, There’s no shortage of great blues ladies to listen to as well but only a few of them are fabulous guitarists – Bonnie Raitt is a top-notch slide guitarist. By the way, she’s headlining the Santa Cruz Blues Festival this year http://www.santacruzbluesfestival.com Susan Tedeschi is a good guitarist as well. Of Course Clapton is a fabulous blues guitarist and so is Rory Gallagher and several other brits. Just enjoy.

The place to start learning to play the blues is really with the 12-bar blues – what is called a “Shuffle”.

Good luck, and “keep the Blues Alive”
