Aside from lessons, personal input from a teacher, how can I find out what to pursue next in learning guitar?
I can play the scales in all of the positions – and have figured out the modes (playing root scales just from a dif’t fret starting position for example) –
is it helpful to memorize what note each fret on each string is? it doesn’t seem that worth it if I can still stop and see “ok this is the 1, so that’s a maj3rd and a 5th and a 7th” or should I start thinking like “ok this is G so that’s B, D, F” yadda yadda
part of me wonders if I need to take a step backwards to do a little more “left-brained” book learning
I think at this point I could play a pretty solid rhythm guitar
but I want to get to a style of more solo and fill type playing like solo Bireli Lagrene or Joe Pass – not that I’d be as good as either of them – but that style none the less –
to go from TABs and chords into more fingerplay and freestyle
